Movie World Queensland: Hollywood on the Gold Coast

If you wanna experience Hollywood on the Gold Coast, definitely spend a day at Movie World Queensland. Filled with thrill rides, an area just for the kids, tons of shopping and plenty of entertainment to keep people of all ages happy! We spent around four hours exploring Movie World, but if you’re visiting with family or have never been before, be sure to set aside an entire day to take in the magic of Australia’s very own Warner Bros. Movie World.

We’ve included a ton of awesome tips and advice in this post, including the best way to get to Movie World from popular Queensland locations, where to buy tickets and how much they cost, plus tips on all of the rides and attractions.

Movie World Queensland: Hollywood on the Gold Coast

Getting to Movie World

If you’ve already visited WetnWild on the Gold Coast, the same directions apply when visiting Movie World, because they’re right next to each other! If you haven’t visited either, here are the directions:

Surfers Paradise to Movie World by car

It’s super easy getting from Surfers Paradise to Movie World by car.

Head down Gold Coast Highway, then turn onto Smith Street and follow the signs. Leave the Highway at Exit 60, then keep following the signs to Movie World. Use Google Maps to make sure you’re heading in the right direction!

Surfers Paradise to Movie World by bus

If you’re staying in Surfers Paradise, you’ll probably see buses driving around that say Movie World across the front. From what we could tell, these buses tend to make quite frequent stops all over Surfers Paradise. We drove ourselves, so we didn’t need to catch a bus.

Your best bet is to head to Cavill Mall and ask where the best place to wait is, at one of the information booths. There might be a small bus fare, so ask the driver before boarding if you’re unsure.

Catching a bus is definitely the easiest way to get to Movie World if you don’t have access to a car!

Brisbane to Movie World by car

If you’re driving to Movie World from Brisbane, follow the signs to the Pacific Motorway and the Gold Coast. Take Exit 60 on the Highway – once you get closer to Movie World, there will be signs directing you.

Again, use Google Maps to make sure you’re going the right way!

Movie World Opening Hours

Movie World is open from 9:30am until 5pm year round.

The gates to the park open at 9:30am, but the rides stay closed until 10am. This gives visitors a chance to find a park, purchase a locked if needed then line up for one of the awesome, unmissable rides!

We arrived at around 9:45am, headed straight for the Superman Escape ride, and managed to get on twice in a row! It definitely pays to arrive early and line up straight away.

Movie World Ticket Prices

Along with Movie World, there are three other theme parks and attractions under the Village Roadshow brand: WetnWild, Sea World and Paradise Country. You can purchase tickets that include entry into all four theme parks, or choose to only visit the parks you’re interested in!

What to Wear to Movie World Gold Coast

Before deciding what to wear to Movie World, keep in mind that the weather in Queensland (and Australia in general) can be brutal, especially during summer.

We visited on a 23 degree celsius day (73 degrees fahrenheit) when the sun was scorching and it wasn’t even summer yet. Queensland is called the Sunshine State for a reason! I was originally wearing a tank top, but changed into a comfy tee about an hour later because the sun  was burning my shoulders.

We suggest wearing a t-shirt and bringing a hat to where while walking around the park. You’ll obviously need to take the hat off before going on rides, but you’ll be glad you have it! Don’t forget sunscreen either, and choose a comfortable pair of shoes. Enclosed shoes are the best, so you don’t have to worry about taking them off while on rides. You’ll also be doing a lot of walking, so the comfier your shoes are, the better!

Food at Movie World

There are plenty of restaurants, cafes and quick snack carts throughout Movie World, to purchase food during your day. There are also popular theme park snacks like churros (my favourite!), ice cream, popcorn and more.

From Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream to Rick’s Cafe, a pizza, pasta and salad buffet. For you over 18’s and of legal age to consume alcohol, you can purchase booze at Movie World with a valid Passport or ID.

Shopping at Movie World

As for shopping, there are a ton of retail outlets to buy all sorts of souvenirs.

From Superman Escape, Warner Bros, Harry Potter, Scooby Doo and all things DC, there’s something for everyone! Souvenirs and Warner Bros. merchandise are quite pricey though, so if you’re hoping to leave with some awesome Movie World Gold Coast souvenirs, bring plenty of money!

Movie World Rides

DC Rivals Hypercoaster

DC Rivals is Movie World’s brand new rollercoast, and the only Hypercoaster in the Southern Hemisphere. We were lucky enough to ride this, and it is definitely an adrenaline rush.

Reaching speeds of up to 115km per hour, you’ll experience tons of twist and turns along the DC Rivals 1.4km track – which is almost double the length of any other ride on the Gold Coast.

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 7 years of age and a minimum of 130cm tall.

Arkham Asylum

The world’s first Arkham Asylum themed rollercoaster. Reaching speeds of up to 85km/h, you’ll be faced with five inversions on this updated Movie World coaster. For an extra $5, visitors can purchase Virtual Reality, for an entirely different Arkham Asylum experience!

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be between 140cm and 200cm tall.

Superman Escape

The absolute best ride at Movie World Gold Coast, without a doubt. Superman Escape will take you from zero to 100km per hour in just two seconds. Your nerves and adrenaline will be pumping while you wait for Superman to blast you outside and up into the sky!

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be between 140cm and 196cm tall.

Note: There are no storage cubes at this ride, because you disembark in a different area than where you got on the ride. Therefore, unless you have someone in your group who doesn’t want to ride Superman Escape, you’ll need to purchase a $2 to store your belongings. The lockers are found right outside the ride.

Batwing Spaceshot

Wait anxiously as you’re shot 60 metres into the sky at terrifying speeds, albeit with an epic view of Movie World. Personally, this type of ride isn’t my thing. Even looking at photos of it makes me queasy. But if you don’t get physically ill at the thought of a 60 metre free-fall, give it a go!

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 123cm tall.

Movie World Queensland: Hollywood on the Gold Coast | Rhiannon Travels

Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster

Speed around sharp turns and plenty of Scooby Doo spookiness on the Spooky Coaster. You’ll be in darkness, not knowing when the next drop or backwards ride is going to happen! This is definitely one of the best rides at Movie World Gold Coast, so make sure you don’t miss out.

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 110cm tall.

Movie World Queensland: Hollywood on the Gold Coast | Rhiannon Travels

Wild West Falls

Flying through the Wild West on a wooden wagon train, you’ll soar past tons of ghost towns on your journey. This ride was unfortunately closed for maintenance when we visited, but it’s still one of the best!

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 95cm tall.
Note: Wild West Falls is a part water coaster, so be prepared to get wet!

Green Lantern Coaster

Take on the steepest inverted drop in the Southern Hemisphere, on the Green Lantern Coaster at Movie World Queensland. Reaching top speeds of 66km per hour, you’re bound to have a blast.

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 140cm tall.

Doomsday Destroyer

Another nope, no thanks rides for us, but if the thought of looping around a huge circle while high in the air, give the Doomsday Destroyer ride a go.

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be totally insane to ride (kidding – sort of) and of a somewhat mature height. We were unable to find the actual height requirements for this one, so we improvised. The staff will tell you whether you’re suitable to ride.

Family Fun at Movie World

Kids WB Fun Zone

Kids WB Fun Zone is the best place to hang out with the Looney Tunes TV show characters – Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety, Sylvester and more! There are also a variety of rides, rollercoasters and water zones just for the kids.

If you’re not a child or do not have children, maybe avoid this area. Tons of screaming and definitely a place where headaches are born!

Justice League 3D

Don’t miss the Justice League Interactive 3D ride! Tons of fun for all members of the family, and absolutely all ages!

Ride Restrictions: Riders between 90cm and 110cm tall must be accompanied by an adult.

Road Runner Rollercoaster

Embark on a chase through the Arizona Desert, on the family fun Road Runner Rollercoaster. This one is perfect for the kids, reaching top speeds of 40km per hour.

Ride Restrictions: Riders must be at least 110cm tall.

Other Information & Things You Should Know

1) Lockers are available for a cost of between $10 and $20 per day, and are located next to the Movie World Photo Centre.

2) Packed food and drinks are not allowed into Movie World, with the exception of bottled water and fruit. Visitors with allergies, and food for babies and small children, are also exceptions to this rule.

3) Don’t forget your camera! There are tons of photo opportunities throughout the park, plus the occasional Superhero or Looney Tunes characters walking around.

4) Arrive early to get on all of the best rides before anyone else. The park opens at 9:30am but the rides are closed until 10am. This gives you half an hour to line up for your favourite ride, and get on once or twice before the queues start to get longer.

5) Don’t forget to bring sunscreen and a hat – the Australian sun is brutal in summer!

We love Movieworld, we head up to the Gold Coast at least once a year to visit family and always try to visit. I loved the VR ride Arkham Asylum, I think it is my favourite ride in Australia.

I’m terrified of rollercoasters! So, that first picture made me scream NO! But the park is so pretty that I might just pay a visit!
