Why I Switched From Wix To A Self-Hosted WordPress Site

If you’re reading this because you’re wanting to create a blog, and aren’t sure which host or platform to use – you’ve come to the right place!

In this post I’ll tell you how and why I switched to a self-hosted WordPress blog, and ditched my old Wix account!

I’m not calling myself an expert by any means, as I only recently made the change, but it is honestly the best thing I have done in a long time! Definitely the best thing I could have possibly done for my blog and social media accounts.

Now I bet you’re wondering why I made the switch? Alright, let me tell you.

WHY I SWITCHED TO A SELF-HOSTED WORDPRESS.ORG BLOG

When I started my blog a few months ago, I did my research of course, but I rushed into the whole process too quickly. I looked into a WordPress site, but the complicated design of it scared me off. Then I discovered Wix.

Wix is a great host/platform for people who are intending on creating a website, NOT a blog. This is because of the drag and drop design feature, that allows you to, well drag and drop anything and everything you want and need, onto each page of your site. Don’t get me wrong, this is an extremely handy option, and made the learning process of blogging and design a LOT easier.

However, after being a part of multiple Facebook groups dedicated to Bloggers from around the world asking for help and advice on whatever it is they are confused about, I started to re-think my decision.

I wasn’t seeing very much traffic to my blog, besides from the people who I had sent the link personally (friends, family, social media links etc). Wix isn’t very good when it comes to SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). Blogs and websites created in Wix, don’t place well on Google searches, and in general aren’t found as often as blogs created on various other platforms – like WordPress.

So I decided to take the plunge and make the switch.

Seriously. Best thing ever. I’m not even kidding.
I’ve spent all day today copying + pasting, editing old blog posts, creating new ones, designing my blog – all the exciting stuff. My wrists are throbbing with pain from being on my laptop for the past 6 hours straight, but that’s okay. It’s totally worth it, I promise.

I bet you’re wondering WHY I think WordPress is the greatest blogging platform on Earth. Right? Of course you are. I’d be wondering too if I read such an epic review on something.

Here are some fantastic, life changing things that WordPress offers, to make your blogging experience world class:

  • Plugins – These are amazing. There are SO many of them. Whatever it is you want added to your blog to make life easier for yourself, they have it. I had no idea the sheer amount of plugins that were available for FREE until I created my account and got the process started.
  • Themes – You can either use free themes or purchase beautiful ones from extremely talented people (and encourage them to keep designing more!). I use the Aruba Nights theme from PipDig. You can check it out here.
  • Amazing 24/7 support – This is something that I’ve discovered when I signed up with SiteGround as the host for my WordPress account. I asked so many stupid questions, and they answered them straight away through a convenient chat function, making the whole process much easier than I expected!
  • Versatility – There are so many options when it comes to using WordPress as your blogging or website host. You have the ability to create beautiful and professional blogs, with very little research or practice. Google and Pinterest will be your best friends when you do require tips and tricks.

So if you’re thinking of starting a blog, and aren’t sure whether WordPress is right for you, I highly suggest giving it a shot! You’ll be surprised just how easy and user friendly it is.

Not to mention the fact that your traffic and readers will explode like crazy – you won’t be able to keep up!

Ahh I love your site so much! I really liked your old design but I think this one is so much better. I recently started using WordPress and it quickly became my favourite blogging platform so I’m glad you’ve discovered it 🙂
